Marian the Librarian is a truly One of a Kind art sculpture. She was thoughtfully handmade by Ben Gatski and his mother, fiber artist Jean Downing. The Mother/Son artistic duo collaborated to bring Marian to life. Marian’s frame was handcrafted by Ben using reclaimed metal. Ben drew out the parts free-hand (he did need his own arm’s measurement to determine her arm length). Bringing her to life, was an example of, “if at first you do not succeed, try, try again.” He first created her head and a dress structure. Neither attempts were deemed successful, so they were built again. He did keep his original arm and shoe. Slowly but certainly Marian came together. Ben’s work needed to be completely finished prior to his mother, Jean’s work with paper and fabric (paper and welding sparks do not like to collaborate).
Jean carefully folded vintage book pages to create a strikingly beautiful collar, as well as for her intricately woven dress. Jean used repurposed fabrics to blend the book pages into Marian’s costume. Marian’s flower is a delightful combination of sewn book covers and pages. While Marian truly makes a statement from afar, she is even more stunning on close inspection.
Marian is an intrepid traveler of the imagination. She is fearless about word-worlds way beyond thoughts. Marian’s onward and forward focus, is thanks to her generation-spanning creators. She is a true wonder!
